How To Achieve Your Marketing Goals

Last month we focused broadly on marketing, and outlined a few marketing tools, such as social media. We briefly mentioned other types of marketing, which is what our focus is this month.

To reiterate from last month, the best way to start is to review your current marketing. Have a look at last month’s newsletter for more information on how to do this. You may not realise how many types of marketing you are currently using and be surprised when you start writing it down.

Many people are turning to social media for their marketing nowadays as it is often zero or low cost to access, and the number of people that can be reached is almost limitless. However, the increase in social media’s popularity has made other types of marketing fade into the background and seem irrelevant by being too “old school”. Other types of marketing can be just as effective now as ever, and bring new customers that you may not have been able to reach through social media.

We will discuss parts of our newsletter in more depth over on our blog and/or Facebook page – so make sure you are “following” us on our blog and Facebook so you don’t miss anything. Use the buttons below to link to our blog and Facebook page.

Other Types of Marketing

When you search “Other Types of Marketing” on the Internet, the most prominent result is “Digital Marketing”. This is interesting, as not only does it show how prominent digital marketing has become, but it also shows how other types of marketing have been pushed far into the shadows.

When we say other types of marketing, we are talking about things OTHER than social media or the “usual” digital marketing avenues – such as websites and apps. We are talking about things like:

  • Print Media – Newspaper/Magazine Advertisements, Flyers, Letter Box Drops
  • Word of Mouth – Have you asked friends, family, past clients to tell their friends, family, clients, colleagues, the world!, how great you are? Do you have a review service where clients can give you a review, e.g. on Facebook, which future clients can see and use to base their decision on when they choose you?
  • Telemarketing

Print Media

How many of us actually receive a traditional newspaper to read with our morning coffee anymore? Many of us are now looking to news websites and apps, such as Stuff, to get our daily news fix. Yet many potential customers can still be reached by traditional print. People will often read their local paper even though they do not pick up a national paper daily. Magazines are popular with certain groups, and can be a great way to target a niche audience. Some airline magazines can be a great way to target the affluent, and other people who travel.

Plus, many business people DO still receive a traditional paper! The physical print media is usually more in-depth and with a greater number of articles than the online version – and being up-to-date with ALL the current news is important for business people so, the obvious choice is to continue receiving print media. How is this good news for you? Because it means you can tap-in to this avenue to get your business known.

Advertising in print media isn’t all that expensive these days, and can have a great reach. Think those in the over 50 demographic, business people, people with no internet or in remote locations. There’s a large number of people who may not even know you exist if you focus purely on digital marketing methods. So, make sure you look into and really consider print media. There are plenty of different print media avenues, such as:

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Brochures
  • Flyers
  • Pamphlets
  • Posters

Often, print advertising packages also come with a digital media component, also providing space on the sellers websites and social media platforms.

Word of Mouth

Word of mouth marketing is important, and a brilliant marketing tool, which is obvious when you see the numbers associated with it:

  • 75% of people don’t believe advertisements, but 92% believe brand recommendations from friends
  • People are 4x more likely to buy when referred by friends
  • WOM generates 2x more sales than paid ads
  • Only 33% of businesses are actively seeking & collecting reviews

When you think of word of mouth marketing, you probably imagine a couple of people having a chat about your business. However, it is not limited to this, and can be achieved in many different ways, such as:

  • Testimonials and Reviews
    It’s a good idea to request customer feedback, which you can then use in your marketing in the form of testimonials and/or reviews. Think about Trivago, for example. This is a service based on reviews! If it weren’t for reviews, Trivago wouldn’t have the key information necessary for it to function;

  • Referrals
Yes, this is sort of what a couple of people having a chat about your business would achieve (“Who did your website? I love it!”, “The team at XXXX, I’d highly recommend them”). However, referrals in the sense we’re meaning isn’t so much word of mouth marketing, but a segment of word of mouth marketing which is more proactive way of generating new clients. It is done by offering your customers an incentive for referring your services, thus increasing the chances of your business being talked about and recommended by others. Ways to incentivise referrals are things like offering your customers 10% off their next business with you, putting everyone who refers a new client into a draw to win a free product/service from you or offering gift vouchers for referrers. This form of marketing, however, requires tracking of referrals and ensuring you are supplying your promised incentive to referrers – otherwise, people will stop referring you and instead be talking about how they didn’t receive what they were promised.

Using the above to encourage word of mouth advertising will really boost the likelihood of you being recommended to others. Pure word of mouth advertising generally only happens when you provide a product or service which goes above and beyond what was expected, in order to motivate the customer to want to tell everyone and anyone who’ll listen about the experience they had.

Did You Know –

A study run by Orbit media showed that content writers who use images got better engagement, and the same can be said regarding tweets. Stone Temple Consulting reviewed 4 million tweets, and this showed that tweets with images gained more retweets, and favourites.
