Elect Steve Hockley

Kia Ora, my name is Steve Hockley and I am standing for the Central Ward seat on the Hutt City Council

Why I’m Standing

Lower Hutt is a great place to live and work. Like anywhere it could be better. Better alignment and thought with the business community will attract more opportunities and jobs to the area. I believe with my background I can be part of this.

My Priorities

  1. Build a sustainable long-term plan for Lower Hutt that allows for the impacts of climate change.
  2. Build local public transport links that deal with the real needs of getting people to work.
  3. Have a deliverable promotional plan for the Hutt that attracts business to Lower Hutt and delivers more events and activities.

About Me

A very sound business background combined with a good ability to work with others and work through issues. I would bring a practical, business-like approach to the council.

Specific Policies

Build a sustainable long-term plan for Lower Hutt that allows for the impacts of climate change.

Comment: Lower Hutt is a great place to work and play and has stood up well to recent climate changes. However, these changes will only get more aggressive and we need a truly long-term plan to manage the impact upon our communities.

  • Relook at the district plan to build a future and flood proof city.
  • Leverage Wellington Cities increased birdlife to attract more birdlife with pest-proof corridors.
  • Endure planning and a consent process does not stand in the way of affordable housing and increased housing supply.
  • No waste by 2030 that is not reused or recycled. A plan that delivers this goal includes the infrastructure around recycling to ensure it happens.

Build local public transport links that deal with the real needs of getting people to work.

Comment: Our rail system is excellent but our buses do not necessarily get people to work at the time they need to be there and do not link well. Solutions need to be considered with these goals in mind.

  • Look at link shuttles to better serve key traveling routes like Waterloo to the City, Petone to Seaview, etc.
  • Have specified commercial zoning areas around stations to encourage people to purchase what they need on the way home and socialise more in local areas.
  • Develop a 20-30 year plan for roading and other transport links based on real estimation of population and future usage.

Have a deliverable promotional plan for the Hutt that attracts business to Lower Hutt and delivers more events and activities.

Comment: Lower Hutt is one of the best kept secrets in our region. It is a great place to do business and to live and work in the same area. We need an event and promotional plan than helps the area to flourish and ensures we have the sorts of events and activities we want.

  • Develop promotional events that attract visitors to the area.
  • Promote the city as a place to do business.
  • Have a business focused team to support and speed up business consents for premises, and look at options to ensure the consents team have the right amount of experience to expedite applications.
